Event 3 Blog

 During unit 9, we spent the week discussing the relationship between space and art. By attending this event and watching the film, “Contact”, I was offered a new perspective on this relationship between space, art, and science as well.

The movie was about a scientist who attempts to interpret what is believed to be a message from aliens. The movie brings up ideas about our place in the universe, space exploration, life’s purpose, faith and religion, science and more. In my blog for unit 9, I mentioned the fascination over space and how it has grown following the expansion of our knowledge of space. This movie exemplifies that growth of space being used in the plot of movies and TV shows as a result of more people becoming interested as I discussed in my blog.

This movie brings to attention many of the implications of space exploration, many of which I had not fully considered until watching. The more we expand what we know about space, the more pictures taken of far off planets, stars, and galaxies, the more we understand how little we truly know about the universe. There is so much more out there than we could possibly hope to understand or experience from Earth. This presents the question of “Are we really alone?” Could Earth really be the only place where life exists? And if so, how does this change the way we perceive the world around us and go about our lives? These questions were all presented throughout the film and they are definitely intriguing to me.

Attending this event and being able to see the ideas that other students came up with has definitely furthered my understanding of what we have studied in this class. This event has exposed me to the different perspectives of my classmates. There were very creative inventions that all seemed to, in some way, be a reflection of the student who came up with it. For example, in my own midterm project, I had incorporated my interest in athletics by coming up with an invention that catered to athletes. Week 9 Blog Assignment

  In this unit, we discussed the relationship between space and art. As a kid, I used to really want to be an astronaut. I have always had a fascination with space, and I can understand why artists have as well. Space is an incredible place that contains things that are unimaginable to us. To me, this unit served as the intersection of all others. Our previous topics such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, math, and robots all come together in a way when we discuss space.
